This is real, and these people are serious. WWJD? Not kiss a girl, that’s for goddamn sure.
How did such a small church get national publicity? It’s a simple method that I perfected in 1992 (at the age of 4). All you have to do is take a pop culture reference, quote it on a church sign, throw in a few conjunctions and adjectives, add “hell” somewhere towards the end and Voila! Barbra Walters now has you on speed dial:

You can’t argue that they’re not closer to Jesus than you; their hairdos reach high enough to graze the heavens. (via jish)
There’s plenty of sensible people in Bethlehem… they just so happen to be the ones with video cameras and YouTube accounts. (via Loic Le Meur)

I think what religion and politics have in common is that they become part of people’s identity, and people can never have a fruitful argument about something that’s part of their identity. By definition they’re partisan. (…) If people can’t think clearly about anything that has become part of their identity, then all other things being equal, the best plan is to let as few things into your identity as possible. (…) there is a step beyond thinking of yourself as x but tolerating y: not even to consider yourself an x. The more labels you have for yourself, the dumber they make you.An interesting read on how to not waste time, breath, and brain cycles defending personal beliefs that can’t be proven. The easiest way? Don’t insult your intelligence by labeling yourself in the first place. (via givemesomethingtoread)
Creedocide - Important Things with Demetri Martin
Caught this on TV last night. So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Demetri Martin’s new show.
Dear Comedy Central: More Demetri, Less Mencia. Thank you.
The Los Angeles Times editorial board, paraphrasing CA Supreme Court Justice Ming W. Chin. (via marc):
“What if the state didn’t bother with recognizing or performing marriage at all, but instead performed civil unions for all, recognized them with all the same rights, and left marriage to religious and other private organizations to define and perform as they wished? The question … is one that the editorial board expects to pursue.”
I remember in grade school when this same idea originally came to me. I unveiled my gay-saving revelation at the lunch table the next day, and thought I was some kind of brilliant homo-sympathizing prophet because of it. Now other people have this idea too?!
Maybe I wasn’t as clever as I thought. Maybe this is one of those basic thoughts that everyone seems to claim as their own stroke of genius like, “OMG, what if when you look at something that is blue, you’re actually seeing what I precieve as orange!” If that’s the case, thank God, because I’d love to see what happens when religious fundamentalists can no longer hide behind the “marriage is definded as the union of a man and a woman” excuse (to which I usually respond, “yeah, well ‘homophobic’ is defined as you”).
(And then I stick my tongue out.)
(And then I get punched in the face.)
