  • Philadelphia Inquirer: Two arrests in Coatesville-area arsons

So two people were recently arrested in relation to Coatesville’s recent string of arson fires that have been making the national news. Turns out the one suspect is a 19-year-old gentleman from my town, and the other suspect is being charged for trying to set fire to my go-to local late-night hangout spot, Happy Days:

Mark Gilliam, 20, of the 1600 block of Suzanne Drive, West Chester, was charged in connection with the Jan. 25, 2009, attempted arson of the Happy Days Family Bistro, 3470 E. Lincoln Highway in Thorndale
There’s a cached version the first suspect’s MySpace page, featuring a “fire widget” which is just, uh, a widget on fire. The West Chester dude’s MySpace profile is private, but the small amount you can see is somewhat intriguing:

Authorities say that they have “very good reason to believe that Gilliam and Barlow know each other.” Crazy stuff.

  • Yelp: iBop Karaoke

    Ashley H:

This place screams rape den, and yet it’s so very awesome.

With six packs in hand, 3 lovely young women walked up to an APARTMENT building and rang the middle buzzer. 3 flights up we knocked on the locked door and were let into what seemed to be an apartment in which every used-to-be bedroom was converted into a dark and grody private karaoke room. I’m not sure what the other rooms were like but ours had sunken in leather couches, bright and merry disco lights and a wall sized karaoke screen.
I accompanied my sister to New York City today, as moral support for her JET interview. We were talking about Japan, and trying to find a place in NYC that had Japanese-style karaoke (read: private rooms). In our search we stumbled across this place, but we didn’t have the time to stop in (I later found out they have a 9 person minimum on Fridays anyways). It’s called iBop, it’s near the Korean area by Penn Station, and it sounds absolutely ridiculous. I’m linking it here so I remember to try and hit it up the next time I’m in NYC with a decent-size group.

  • Morton's Toe

    Ryan DeNardo:

My second toe is longer than my big toe; about 10% of the population also have Morton’s Toe.  It apparently used to be associated with royalty and can be the cause of musculoskeletal disfunction.  Check it out.

I have this too, so I guess it further explains the special bond I share with Nardo. But this real question is, does this mean we’re more evolved or less?

Like Lazenby (Solo Demo) - Sondre Lerche

Tuesday night Nardo and I went to The World Cafe Live to see Sondre Lerche perform at the last stop on his most recent North American tour.

This song is from an EP he was selling called Polaroid Pumpkin Party. It cost $15 and all of the copies are personally burnt and signed by him, and include a unique Polaroid photograph. More artists should do this because I doubt they get much of a cut from the commercial albums they sell at shows anyways. Sondre makes himself immune to falling victim to the changing economics of the music business by knowing how to put on an amazing live show, and by not being afraid to put his heart into little independent limited releases. That’s not to say he doesn’t make a good amount of his living from things like Dan in Real Life, I’m just making a point that he’s smart and genuine enough to be able to set himself up for a long and intimate relationship with his core fan base. Love your fans and they’ll love you back.

I’ll post a scan of the photo I got once I get it back from Ryan (who I lent my album to so that he could rip it and keep his copy unopened).

  • Nothing I’d Rather Do

So I took a surprise trip to Franklin County, PA yesterday/today to drive my grandma in for surgery.  Idly sitting in a Central PA hospital waiting room can be much more interesting than you’d think. It’s kind of sad, but being that my grandma’s hospital is in an area where a large percentage of the population consists of Senior Citizens (otherwise known as old people), the hospital waiting room functions much like a shopping mall does for teenagers: as a center of gossip where you’re sure to see more than one of your peers at any given time.  The only real difference is instead of getting an Orange Julius while they’re there, they get their gallbladder taken out.

And on this impromptu 2-day trip, with its long car rides, hospital waiting rooms, and TV-less bedrooms (what!?), I had a lot of time to think, and having discussed this briefly with a few individuals already, I’m going to make a head-first attempt at launching my video podcast this fall.  I’ll be releasing 3 original pieces of media-rich web content at billyd.tv each week, and in doing so I’ll be a full time podcaster, along with already being a full time student and a part time publicist.  But this is the only way any of this will ever work, because I work best when completely bombarded and totally stressed out.  Relaxation kills my creativity’s boner and, at 20, I feel innovative limpness is unacceptable. I’ll probably be overloading myself this fall, but there’s nothing I’d rather do.
